Art Therapy and Provocative Therapy
In the 1960's an American social worker by the name of Frank Farrelly was working with Carl Rogers at Mendota State Psychiatric Institute. In his 93rd interview with a schizophrenic patient, tired of incessant threats and delusions, Farrelly tried a provocative approach, using humour. He documented and published this work and this was the beginning of the therapeutic discipline known as Provocative Therapy. (www.provocativetherapy.com)

Provocative Therapy incorporates the use of reverse psychology and humour into the therapeutic encounter to catalyse cognitive behavioural change. Since discovering this way of communicating with clients, I have been attending training workshops with Farrelly, and with The British Institute of Provocative Therapy (www.provocativetherapy.co.uk) Provocative Therapy training has enabled me how to use my sense of humour in a therapeutically-directed way, to help my clients.

I have written up a short case history, with the client's images, to show how the direct, and sometimes crude, dialogue has enabled the client to move from a state of fragmentation to one of integration. The images the client made are both an illustration of this, and stand in their own right as an art therapy intervention.
